Volunteering

Volunteer with Friends

Friends volunteers contribute their time, as well as their organizational skills, to various revenue-generating activities and fundraising events.

Donations of items for silent auctions and raffles are gratefully accepted. These events are held periodically and proceeds go towards specific projects or programs. Community support is always welcome.

On special and seasonal occasions, Friends volunteers distribute gift vouchers redeemable at the Corner Store and Hair Salon to patients. Children receive Tiny Tawney’s (our Pet Therapy Dog!) at Christmas.

Work with Our Partners

To supplements its efforts, Friends also partners with other not-for-profit societies to deliver on-going programs that contribute to the well-being and quality of life of patients.

  • The special Comfort Blanket Program was introduced in early 2016 by the Friends in partnership with the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation and the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation. In 2016, Friends volunteers distributed close to 1300 lap blankets to new patients admitted to the Glenrose, including children staying overnight. This three-way partnership will continue in 2017.
  • For a number of years, Friends has supported the Pet Therapy Society of Northern Alberta in providing animal-assisted therapy at the Glenrose. In fact, Tawney—the pet companion of members Bill and Carol Cowan—was the inspiration for Friends signature puppy. As a memento of the special human-animal bond, the plush toy has been handed out to thousands of patients during visits by Tawney.
